Our Team
Michael T. Cocuzza, Clinical Director:
Including nearly ten years of clinical service of counseling adolescents, adults, seniors, and families, I am a Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) and a Licensed Clinical Alcohol and Drug Counselor (LCADC) in the State of New Jersey. I am also a National Certified Counselor (NCC) and a Certified Clinical Mental Health Counselor (CCMHC) through the National Board of Certified Counselors (NBCC). I am a certified brainspotting practitioner that assists clients struggling with overt anxiety and trauma and I have a certification as a human-animal intervention specialist that enables me to incorporate animal-assisted therapy in treatment planning. With a broad spectrum of services and experience available, I like to conduct therapy in a way that can be easily modified or adapted week-to-week to address any given concerns that may arise.
Daniela Olivera, Therapist:
I am a Licensed Associate Counselor (LAC) in the state of New Jersey and a Therapist/Supervised Network Provider at WayFare Counseling, LLC.
I help individuals and couples to gain better balance, manage stress, and improve their mental well-being. Oftentimes our experiences negatively influence the way we think, feel, and understand ourselves and the world. My approach is to assist clients in processing their experiences, outlooks and feelings that have been holding them back and to develop a more positive worldview. My goal is to help my clients heal and create better versions of themselves.
Gerda, Co-Therapist:
Gerda, our facility dog and co-therapist, is a golden retriever with a background dedicated to mental health including months of training provided by Canine Companions for Independence. When she is working, she enjoys the benefit of any other service dog enabling her to directly assist her clients in their mutually agreed-upon treatment objectives.
Area of Expertise:
Cognitive Behavioral Therapy:
The American Psychological Association describes cognitive behavioral therapy as being based on altering unhelpful ways of thinking and unhelpful patterns of behavior. Using the assistance of a counselor, clients are challenged to identify distortions in one’s thinking that result in problems. Knowledge of this approach enables a better understanding of ourselves and the motivations of others, and can develop confidence in social situations. Lastly, behavioral techniques can also be learned to calm one’s mind or body, enabling for more effective change.
Existential Therapy:
You are human. We live in a world that is ever changing. Grief is the feeling that we sometimes experience in response to these changes and while it is not indicative of a mental health disorder, you still deserve an opportunity to make sense of the world around you and the changes that have been forced upon you. Talk therapy with an emphasis on the human experience enables you to accept, and even thrive in the face of circumstances beyond our control.
Motivational Interviewing:
It is never the counselor’s job to tell you what to do with your life. Long-term changes come from enabling an individual to make decisions for themselves. Motivational interviewing is particularly effective at assisting clients weighing the advantages and disadvantages of their behaviors and assess the changes that they would like to make in the process of realizing their goals. This approach is proven particularly effective, often in conjunction with cognitive behavioral therapy, for recovery from substance dependency and other behaviors we are reluctant to change.
Brainspotting:
Dr. David Grand defines brainspotting as “a tool … to neurobiologically locate, focus, process, and release experiences and symptoms that are typically out of reach of the conscious mind and its cognitive and language capacity.” Brainspotting is a meditative practice that emphasizes mindfulness to alleviate tension created by anxiety or other symptoms in the body. This is done by “holding the client’s eye position while the client is focused on the somatic/sensory experience of the symptom or problem being addressed in the therapy.” When typical talk therapy approaches seem to have reached their limit, brainspotting can be an alternative approach, directed and controlled by the client rather than the counselor, that can be used (sometimes nonverbally) to reduce emotional traumas that seem to be beyond description.

Animal-Assisted Interventions:
All the therapies listed above can be animal-assisted with the presence of our service-trained therapy dog. When she is working, she directly assists clients in mutually agreed-upon treatment objectives. For example, symptoms of ADHD can be alleviated when focused on, interacting with, and teaching a dog a new trick. Gerda, our facility dog, teaches us confidence by virtue of the fact that she responds and is sensitive to our current emotional state at a given time. Gerda also assists us in remaining mindful and in the present moment as she, herself, is always reacting to the present (especially when treats are involved).
